BLEVE
Stands
for Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion. This is a type of explosion
that can occur when a vessel containing a pressurized liquid is ruptured.
Such explosions can be extremely hazardous. A BLEVE
can occur in a vessel that stores a substance that is usually a gas at
atmospheric pressure but is a liquid when pressurized (for example, liquefied
petroleum gas). The substance will be stored partly in liquid form, with a
gaseous vapor above the liquid filling the remainder of the container. If the
vessel is ruptured - for example, due to corrosion, or failure under pressure
- the vapor portion may rapidly leak, dropping the pressure inside the
container and releasing a wave of overpressure from the point of rupture.
This sudden drop in pressure inside the container causes violent boiling of
the liquid, which rapidly liberates large amounts of vapor in the process.
The pressure of this vapor can be extremely high, causing a second, much more
significant wave of overpressure (i.e., an explosion) which may completely
destroy the storage vessel and project it as shrapnel over the surrounding
area. A BLEVE does not require a flammable substance to occur,
and therefore is not usually considered a type of chemical explosion.
However, if the substance involved is flammable, it is likely that the
resulting cloud of the substance will ignite after the BLEVE proper has
occurred, forming a fireball and possibly a fuel-air explosion. BLEVEs can
also be caused by an external fire nearby the storage vessel causing heating
of the contents and pressure build-up |
BLEVE

Fire Diamond
Symbol
designed by the NFPA
to give a quick number rating for the particular material's degree of health
(blue), flammability (red), reactivity (yellow), and specific (white) hazard. The
diamond is broken into four sections. Numbers in the three colored sections
range from 0 (least severe hazard) to 4 (most severe hazard). The fourth
(white) section is left blank and is used only to denote special fire
fighting measures/hazards.

Fire Point
Lowest
temperature at which liquid will produce sufficient vapor to flash near its
surface and continue to burn. A
temperature at which the flame becomes self-sustained so as to continue
burning the liquid (at the flash point, the flame does not need to be
sustained). The fire point is usually a few degrees above the flash point. |

Flammable Aerosol
Product
packaged in an aerosol container and can release a flammable material. A
flammable aerosol is defined by the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety
Administration (OSHA)
as "an aerosol which is required to be labeled flammable under the Federal
Hazardous Substances Labeling Act... These aerosols is considered Class IA liquids." |

|
Flammable Limits/ Explosions
The
Flammable Limits refer to the conditions under which a mixture of a flammable
material and air may catch fire or explode. If the percentage of flammable
material in the air is between the minimum and maximum limits, the presence
of a flame or a source of ignition is likely to lead to rapid combustion or
explosion. Flammable
limits for many materials are in the range 2 - 10%, but for some materials
the limits are much wider. Ether for example, has flammable limits of 1.7 -
48%, which is an unusually wide range. This coupled with the low boiling
point of ether (34.6ºC) and high vapor pressure at room temperature ( The material for which flammable limits are quoted may be a flammable liquid, such as ether or methanol, or a powder or dust such as flour or grain dust. |

Flammable Liquid
Defined
by DOT and NFPA as a liquid with a
flash point below 100ºF. Flammable liquids are: Class
1 - Liquids and may be subdivided as follows: Class
1A - Flash point below 73ºF and boiling point below 100ºF Class
1B - Flash point below 73ºF and boiling point at or above 100ºF Class See: Combustible liquids |
Class 1
Class |

Flash Back
Occurs
when a trail of flammable material is ignited by a distant spark or ignition
source. The flame then travels along the trail of the material back to its
source. |

|
Flash Point
The
lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough flammable vapor to
ignite and produce a flame when an ignition source is present. There are several flash point test methods, and flash
points may vary for the same material depending on the method used, so the
test method is indicated when the flash point is given. |

Gas
Formless fluid that occupies the
space of its enclosure. Can settle to the bottom or top of an enclosure when
mixed with other materials. Can be changed to its liquid or solid state only
by increased pressure and decreased temperature. The state of matter distinguished from the solid and
liquid states by: relatively low density and viscosity; relatively great
expansion and contraction with changes in pressure and temperature; the
ability to diffuse readily; and the spontaneous tendency to become
distributed uniformly throughout any container A state of matter, in which
the molecules move freely and consequently the entire mass tends to expand
indefinitely, occupying the total volume of any vessel into which it is
introduced. Gases follow, within considerable degree of fidelity, certain
laws relating their conditions of pressure, volume and temperature. Gases mix
freely with each other, and they can be liquefied through compression or
temperature reduction. |

react with moisture in the respiratory tract to produce acids that corrode
and irritate tissue, causing congestion and pulmonary edema. Symptoms of
acute exposure can develop over 6 to 24 hours. Chronic exposure to low levels
can cause irritation, cough, headache, and tooth corrosion. Exposure to 5 to

Odor Threshold
Lowest
concentration of a substance's vapor, in air, that can be smelled. The Odor Threshold is the lowest concentration, in ppm, of a chemical in
the air that
is detectable by smell. The odor threshold should only be regarded as an estimate. This is
because odor thresholds are commonly determined under controlled laboratory conditions using
people trained in odor recognition. As well, in the workplace, the ability to detect the odor
of a chemical varies from
person to person and depends on conditions such as the presence of
other odorous materials.
Odors cannot be used as a warning of unsafe conditions since workers may become used to
the smell (adaptation), or the chemical may numb the sense of smell, a process called olfactory
fatigue. However, if the odor threshold for a chemical is well below its exposure
limit, odor can be used to warn of a problem with your respirator. |

Vapor DensityWeight of vapor or gas compared to
an equal volume of air; expression of the density of the vapor or gas. |
Vapor Pressure
Pressure exerted by a saturated
vapor above its liquid in a closed container. Important facts to remember: ·
Vapor pressure of a substance at 100° F will always be
higher than the vapor pressure of the substance at 60° F. ·
Vapor pressures reported on MSDS/s in mmHg are usually
very low pressures; 760 mmHg is equivalent to 14.7 psi. The lower the boiling point of a
substance, the higher its vapor pressure. |
Vertigo
Feeling of revolving in space;
dizziness, giddiness. Vertigo is a type of dizziness
felt as a shift in a person's relationship to the normal environment (a
feeling that the room is spinning is common) or a sense of movement in space.
Although dizziness and vertigo are often used
interchangeably, they are not the same thing. While all vertigo is dizziness,
not all dizziness is vertigo. |
Viscosity
Tendency
of a fluid to resist internal flow without regard to its density. This
resistance acts against the motion of any solid object through the fluid and
also against motion of the fluid itself past stationary obstacles. Viscosity
also acts internally on the fluid between slower and faster moving adjacent
layers. |
Volatile Organic CompoundsUsed in
coatings and paint because they evaporate very rapidly. |
VOC

Water Reactive
Material
that reacts with water to release a gas that is either flammable or presents
a health hazard. |
