About the Israel Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene

About Us

The Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene is leading in the fields of occupational safety and occupational hygiene and acts as a hub for all bodies involved in the promotion of occupational safety and occupational hygiene. Three core values accompany the institute's activity: "innovation, creativity and a learning organization"

The Institute for Safety and Hygiene (the IIOSH), is a statutory, non-profit corporation, established in 1954 according to section 26 of the 1954 Labor Inspection Organization Law. IIOSH was established in order to promote a culture of work safety and occupational hygiene, in various fields: industry, service and commerce, construction and agriculture. This can be achieved, among other things, through research, risk diagnosis, managers' training, the National Center for Simulators, the National Lifeline Center, training, advocacy, information, surveys and monitoring.

The IIOSH does not engage in supervision and enforcement activities, operations entrusted to the regulator, who is the safety administration in the labor branch of the Ministry of Economy and Industry. In a manner similar to that which exists in most countries of the western world, where there is a clear distinction between enforcement and prevention, advocacy and research.

Purpose

The purpose of the IIOSH as defined by law is "to promote safety and professional hygiene at work". The main actions defined by the legislator are: to conduct  educational and training activities; to conduct and publish research; to assist in appointing safety trustees and safety committees, to guide and encourage them in their actions; to assist the Occupational Safety and Hygiene Administration in its operations; to advise the Minister of Economy and Industry on matters related to safety and hygiene; to award recognition certificates to those who excel in matters of safety and hygiene in the workplace.

Message from the Director General

Greetings Everyone,

Welcome to the website of the Israel Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene. In this website, you will find information regarding the diverse services that we provide..

The activity of the Israel Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene is based on a real and genuine concern for the health and safety of the employee and its existence is possible thanks to a combination of extraordinary forces including employee representatives, employers and government ministries, spearheaded by the Ministry of Economy and Industry.

The main focus of the Institute’s activity is the creation of a culture of occupational safety, encouraging personal responsibility, vigilance with regard to hazards and their elimination and creating a safe work environment. All these factors are the key to preventing accidents and promoting occupational safety.

The mandate received by the Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene back in 1954 was “to promote the subject of occupational safety and to protect the health and life of the employee.” Consequently, the Institute’s activity is exclusively related to the fields of prevention and focuses on providing relevant services, training and research.

Enforcement steps are not the purview of the Institute and are executed by the regulator, in this case – the Occupational Safety and Health Administration at the Ministry of Labor, Welfare and Social Services.

The Institute’s staff is comprised of the best experts in Israel. They come from various disciplines, including engineers, experts in the natural sciences, life sciences, and behavioral sciences, etc. The basket of services features a variety of activities, including professional training and seminars, environmental / occupational monitoring, risk assessment, laboratory services, providing training and assistance to safety officers and supervisors, establishing safety committees, providing professional information through the information center, the website, social media and additional digital channels, as well as publishing literature and professional material, etc.

This service is provided by the regional branches and the Institute’s divisions at training centers nationwide and in the workplace.

We invite you to become our partners in our activity and to take part in creating a better, safer and healthier environment.
